Scoby's make up kombucha drinks, but few too many really understand the significance behind what kombucha really is and how it is made.

Scoby is a, 'Symbiotic culture of bacteria and yeast.'

What does this mean exactly for those that drink kombucha (that fizzy exploding drink), that your health loving friend drinks daily, oh yes that one. A scoby is the living home for the bacteria and yeast that transform any tea into fizzy and frothy kombucha, that warning labels read not to shake or they will explode. Note to self that one time I didn't realize the kombucha got a bit of a shake and exploded all over my car. Kombucha smells in your car for days, is not so pleasant, try it sometime.

Actually, I don't recommend you try that at home, or if you do shake your kombucha do so with caution over a sink.  Kombucha drinks have become wildly popular in the last year and many companies are popping up.

Personally, I was drinking kombucha drinks daily, until I realized I had candida and for those that understand candida is the overgrowth of yeast. For someone with candida I would highly recommend staying away from not only kombucha but going on a sugar detox, as candida can grow from having too much sugar in the body. Kombucha may have probiotic cultures in it, but most all kombuchas are made with sugar, and tea and drinking kombucha on a regular basis can irritate the candida and add more bacterial yeast to the body, making the candida worse.

Kombucha has some positive effects as well as negative effects.

For starters kombucha is highly acidic, contains sugar and bacterial yeast so for someone with candida this may not be ideal. It has been said that kombucha can help with candida, but personally I tihnk until the candida is healed it is best to go with probiotics without sugar, which kombucha is typically made from with fermented tea.  On the other side of the coin kombucha does have positive benefits.

Kombucha has healthy bacteria for the gut, also known to many as probiotics,  can contain b vitamins and enzumes. Just realize though you are not getting a large dose of bacterial strains when drinking kombucha, but it can be of some benefit versus not having any probiotics bacteria at all.

I personally have become a big fan of Jun Kombucha. Wild tonic is a brand I highly recommend, as I have yet to see too many Jun kombucha brands on the market.  Wild tonic not only has a chic and shabby glass blue bottle, but they have less sugar than that of a kombucha with cane sugar. Another piece is if the brand you are buying is not using organic sugar and tea, you may be getting a kombucha that is not the cleanest, even if it does have probiotics in it.

Are you familiar with B corporations? If you are not, now is the time to start paying attention. B corporation certification (also known B labs) and status is essentially is what a for profit is to a not for profit.

According to the B corporation website:

"Certified B CorporationsTM redefine success in business.

Individually, B Corps meet the highest standards of verified social and environmental performance, public transparency, and legal accountability, and aspire to use the power of markets to solve social and environmental problems.

Collectively, B Corps lead a growing global movement of people using business as a force for goodTM. Through the power of their collective voice, one day all companies will compete to be best for the worldTM, and society will enjoy a more shared and durable prosperity for all."

B Corporations have many admiring qualities to include some of the following:

28% of their management as women or minorities,

55% are more likely to cover some part of health insurance

18% are more likely to use suppliers from lower income communities

68% are more likely to donate at least 10% of profits to charity

Not to mention B corporations are truly caring about the environment by focusing on the good for the overall planet and the people.

The certification for B corporation status is rigorous and cumbersome, but really attests to the type of company that a  B corporation can be.

Some of my favorite B corporate companies include, but are not limited to.

Organic India, Bhakti Chai, Garden of Life, You Caring, Dr. Bronners-All One, Beautycounter, Dang Foods LLC, OluKai, Traditional Medicinals, Numi Organic Tea, Mamma Chia, Guayaki Yerba Mate, Method/ Ecover, Dogearned, EO, Patagonia and many others.

So, if you are like me and care about the environment and world we live in, start paying attention to the companies who are paying attention to the simple, yet important factors of giving back, paying their employees and just doing overall good for the world, their people and communities.

Are you like me and consistently reading labels of products to see what the ingredients are in your favorite products? If that is the case, then you came to the right place. Parabens are in so many of the cosmetics and household cleaners that consumers use on a daily basis, but if you aren't familiar with what they are then keep reading.

Parabens are essentially preservatives used in cosmetics and personal care products. Parabens can do many things, such as disrupt hormones, cause skin allergy and irritation, and can be linked to various cancers, including breast cancer. According to the Environmental Worknig Group, also known as the EWG (www.ewg.org), the EWG research has found that, on average, women use 12 personal care products each day, which exposes them to 168 chemical ingredients. Men use about half of the number of products used by women, but still expose themselves to 85 unique chemicals on a daily basis." Source: (ewg.org).

A wonderful thing is happening in the United States with the beauty care industry due to a few passionate politicians.

A personal Care products Safety Act was introducted to Congress in 2015 and local politicians, Senator Diane Feinstein (California) and Susan Collins (Maine) would insure the Food And Drug Administration (FDA), would ensure cosmetics and personal care products are safer.

In this bill that was proposed and continues to be found within the Congressional offices, it would call for the following:

"In its first safety assessments, the FDA would review:

  • Methylene glycol, a form of formaldehyde recognized as a known human carcinogen and used in dangerous hair smoothing treatments;
  • Propyl paraben, a preservative linked to hormone disruption;
  • Lead acetate, a potent neurotoxin used in men’s hair dyes;
  • Diazolidinyl urea, a preservative that releases formaldehyde;
  • Quaternium-15, another formaldehyde-releasing preservative."

A brand that is making waves and is supporting this Safety Act is Beautycounter and happens to be a top brand of mine as well. I support their mission and absolutely am a fan of their products from their makeup to their lotions, body washes and face serums. They just happened to be on the Today Show, today, talking about their safe skincare mission and banning of over 1,500 unsafe ingredients. Members of Beautycounter will be heading to Congress next week and holding meetings locally in all states with local Congressional representatives.
